NEW DELHI: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Top Court on Monday seeking permission for peaceful protests at Jantar Mantar in the national capital. The petition was filed by Supreme Court advocate Narendra Mishra.
SC Assures Early Consideration of Plea
Advocate Narendra Mishra urged the Chief Justice of India to take up the petition at the earliest. During the proceedings, the Supreme Court indicated that the matter would be considered and listed for hearing. However, the court has not yet specified a date for the hearing or issued any substantive directions on the plea.
CJI Seeks Clarity on Relief Sough
During the hearing, the Chief Justice of India sought clarification from the petitioner regarding the nature of the relief being sought and asked who had filed the petition. The CJI also sought to know whether the matter had been filed as a PIL.
In response, the counsel submitted that the petition seeks specific directions to ensure that the Delhi Police allows peaceful demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.
Plea Seeks Right to Hold Peaceful Protest
The petition alleges that political parties and social activists are not being permitted to hold peaceful demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. It seeks the Supreme Court’s intervention and appropriate directions to the authorities to facilitate peaceful and democratic protests at the designated protest venue. The plea argues that access to a lawful and peaceful avenue for public expression should be ensured in accordance with the applicable legal framework.
